Dr. Ana de Freitas Boe was trained as a scholar of eighteenth-century British literature and culture. Her teaching interests include travel and gender in the eighteenth century; Jane Austen and contemporary culture; the gothic; dystopia; and literature and film of the South Asian diaspora. As a scholar, she has published on Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More in “Women’s Writing” (2011) and Aphra Behn in the Modern Languages Association of America’s publication “Approaches to Teaching Behn’s ‘Oroonoko’” (2014). More recently, Boe co-edited “Heteronormativity in Eighteenth-Century Literature and Culture” (2015). Both her scholarship and teaching wrestle with historical constructions of gender, sexuality and race. Boe is the director of the gender studies minor at BW.

Boe has also developed a passion for study abroad. She co-led BW’s faculty-led seminar in Ecuador in 2011 and co-led a seminar in Europe in 2016.
